Cognitive Processing of Miscommunication in Interactive Listening: An Evaluation of Listener Indecision and Cognitive Effort

Purpose The purpose of the current study was to evaluate social and cognitive underpinnings miscommunication during an interactive listening task. Method An eye computer mouse–tracking visual-world paradigm used investigate how a listener's effort (local global) decision-making processes were affected by speaker's use ambiguity that led miscommunication. Results Experiments 1 2 found environmental cue made more or less salient impacted listener language processing (eye-tracking). Experiment also indicated listeners may develop different heuristics dependent upon miscommunication, exerting significant impact on cognition decision making. We perspective-taking complexity metrics (computer mouse tracking) predict effort, indicating instances produced consequences indecision, thinking, pull. Conclusion Together, these results indicate behave both reciprocally adaptively when miscommunications occur, but way they respond is largely type often it speaker.
